Fargo, N.D. — In recognition of President Dean L. Bresciani’s 12 years of leadership at North Dakota State University, alumni and friends have made gifts totaling more than $3 million to establish a first of its kind endowed chair in leadership. The President Dean L. Bresciani Endowed Chair in Leadership will honor and support outstanding campus leaders who are advancing NDSU’s mission.

The fund’s establishment was kept a secret until its unveiling to Bresciani and more than 450 guests at the NDSU Foundation’s Evening of Distinction event, held April 28, 2022, at the Holiday Inn in Fargo, North Dakota.

Bresciani was named NDSU’s 14th president in 2010. His leadership duties during a 35-year career have been broad, covering academic, administrative and political aspects of public higher education. In addition to his service as NDSU’s president, he has held numerous national leadership positions, including the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities and the NCAA. He concludes his NDSU presidency on May 16, 2022.

“President Bresciani’s legacy of leadership at NDSU has been transformative and touches every corner of campus,” NDSU Foundation President and CEO John Glover, said. “And the people whose lives he touched wanted to honor him into perpetuity by establishing this endowment. The funds will be used to support scholarships, advance strategic priorities by the chairholder and enhance excellence at NDSU.”

The President Bresciani Leadership Chair will be an appointment made by a selection committee that will include NDSU’s president, provost, faculty and staff senate leaders, student government leaders, and Foundation leadership. The appointed position will rotate every three years. Faculty and staff members, program or center directors, department heads, coaches, and others with a track record of leadership success will be eligible to hold the chair.

The Foundation is still accepting gifts to support the endowment. At the time of the announcement, more than $3 million had been gifted to the fund. To make a gift, please visit www.NDSUFoundation.com/Bresciani-Leadership-Endowment.

Margaret and her husband, Hugh Veit ’79, established the Eleanor S. Fitzgerald Memorial Graduate Student Scholarship to support NDSU students earning advanced degrees in the Department of Health, Nutrition, and Exercise Sciences or the Department of Human Development and Family Science.

Core areas of home economics remain part of current NDSU degree programs such as accounting; apparel, retail merchandising, and design; education; family and consumer science; financial planning; human development and family science; interior design; and nutrition science.

Home economics programs opened doors, particularly for women, to earn college degrees and pursue careers in education, Extension, state and federal government, business and industry, health care, and more. NDAC listed domestic economy as one of its courses in its founding year, 1890.

Established by Dr. Teresa Conner, dean of the NDSU College of Health and Human Sciences, and co-chaired by Dr. Margaret Fitzgerald ’83 and Col. Esther Meyers ’75, the Wisdom Keepers provide support and share their knowledge and expertise with students, faculty, staff, and leadership in the College.

The home management house at NDAC was the first facility built on a college campus specifically for home management practice. In 1954, it was named in honor of Alba Bales, the first female academic dean at NDAC.
